Our
gospel passage today reminds us
that it is among the primary missions of Jesus not only to save the world
and then leave it to fend for itself; no, he also is very much interested in
remaining with everyone redeemed (and also the potentially redeemed), and to
offer as much assistance, spiritual nourishment and encouragement as he
possibly can so that they stay the course which can now – thanks to his
resurrection – lead to eternal life in a Kingdom prepared for them! The
quintessential spiritual aids are the sacraments: and the queen among them is
the Eucharist: the Mass we share right now.
In
the first reading, the impetus behind the proclamation of this
truth is seen in the unrestrainable
reality of the gospel: there is no containing or impeding its spread: for
the command to take it to the ends of the earth came from Jesus: and thus must
indeed be carried out: God’s word will
not return to him empty and void, but shall do what he sent it to do!
May
we, today, live, both on the bread of this Eucharistic
Sacrifice, and also the good works of
gospel spreading that we are compelled to do after we have shared in it:
no, man does not live just on bread, but
also works of charity and love whose mandate comes from the mouth of God!
Alleluia!
Alleluia!
