+ The gospel passage today tells us all to remain awake: because
we “do not know when the Lord will come” – and those who are caught off guard
will be severely punished – this for those who call themselves his disciples.
We speak here of at least two
“comings of the Lord” – the first that comes to mind is the grand “Second
Coming” when accounts will be cleared – the light will be switched on –
everything will be known to everyone – and each will get his just rewards. This
coming we are aware of – though we perhaps don’t bring it to our front brain burners
as we should.
But what might help and help
indeed is to get into the practice of not only expecting the Lord to come at
any future moment – but to actually greet him and be with him in any given
moment – any indeed! Classically this was called “the sacrament of the moment”
– in recent years it has become known as Mindfulness – but for us disciples of
Christ it can be fine tuned as “Christian/Catholic” Mindfulness.
It is a fascinating way to
live the day – and it puts everything in its proper place – it “gives us the
‘control’ that we think we need to have – especially when our lives or life
arounds us spins out of control – say, as it is doing now with the presidency
of our country and our response to it as citizens of this earth, and of course
in the Church, where the hierarchy is being unmasked in their all to human sinfulness
and criminality.
But the best news is the God
still remains in charge of everything as he always has been – and when we meet
him in the moment – especially the moments after receiving his Body and Blood
in the Eucharist at Mass – we are safe, we are secure, we are protected, we are
energized to face each subsequent moment in our day with peace and joy and
hope!
Let us live this day “mindful”
of the Lord’s manifold blessings and “awake and ready” to meet him moment by
moment!
Amen.
Stay
awake! For you do not know when the Son of Man will come! (or maybe we do!)
